The story never had a name until it came time to submit the work, then
I struggled and finally came up with putting in a scene (see below) and use the
name embedded there.
‘Clinging to the plunging re pony’
The other element was ‘the stag’ which symbolized the dominating
manipulating grandfather, and the grand-daughter who would not be intimidated
by his authority.
From the book –
‘I had to wait ever since that deer stalk on the Highland estate. Do you
remember?’
Jariah frowned at the distant memory.
‘It was summer and I joined Mother holidaying in the Highlands. Charles had
invited some influential hobnobs. A stalk was arranged and the Gillie took us
out. We were closing in on a ten point stag when you thundered up on a pony screaming
like a banshee, accusing everyone of bloody murder. Of course the stag bolted’
he smiled, remembering the vivid image of the slim body clinging to the
plunging red pony, her hair windswept, wild eyes accusing as she put herself
between the stalkers and the fleeing deer.
‘Yes, that day changed everything’ he murmured.
